Pattern
Dan-Gun
Dan-Gun is named after the Holy Dan Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year 2,333BC.
Number of Movements: 21
Starting Position – Parallel ready stance

The diagram for this pattern assumes that the student is stood on line AB and is facing D.
- Move the left foot to B forming a right L-stance, executing a middle knife hand guarding block.
- Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
- Move the right foot to A turning clockwise to form a left L-stance, executing a middle knife hand guarding block.
- Move the left foot to A forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
- Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a left low outer forearm block.
- Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
- Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
- Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
- Move the left foot to E, turning counter clockwise to form a right L-stance, executing a twin forearm block.
- Move the right foot to E forming a right walking stance, executing a right high punch.
- Move the right foot to F turning clockwise to form a left L-stance, executing a twin forearm block.
- Move the left foot to F forming a left walking stance, executing a left high punch.
- Move the left foot to C forming a left walking stance, executing a left low outer forearm block.
- Execute a left rising block, maintaining the left walking stance. Perform 13 and 14 in a continuous motion.

- Move the left foot to B turning counter clockwise to form a right L-stance, executing a left middle knife hand strike.

Set Sparring
Numbers 1, 2 & 3
Attackers start in left walking stance, obverse low section outer forearm block. Attack = three middle section obverse punches in walking stance to the opponents solar plexus (bottom of the V of the suit!).
Defenders start in parallel ready stance.
- Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times. Counter attack = Move the left leg forward 45°, move the right leg behind the opponents front leg into a left L stance, execute a right knifehand strike to the back of the neck.
- Left leg back, L stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times. Counter attack = Move the left leg forward 45°, move the right leg behind the opponents front leg into a left L stance, execute a right knife hand strike to the back of the neck.
- Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times. Counter attack = Move the left leg forward 45°, move the right leg behind the opponents front leg into a left L stance, execute a right knifehand strike to the back of the neck.
Theory
What is Three Step Sparring?
Three step sparring is a two person drill to help learn the correct distance from your opponent and to block and counter at the correct time. For children under 10: Three step sparring helps me learn correct distance and timing.
